How to Get Your HVAC System Ready for the Spring Season

A dirty air filter

The spring season is just a few weeks away, which means you need to start planning spring maintenance tasks like HVAC maintenance. In today’s post, local air conditioning repair service company Shackelford Heating & Cooling shares tips on how to get your HVAC heating and air conditioning systems ready for spring.

Replace the air filters. HVAC systems need new air filters every three months, and sometimes monthly during seasons of heavy use. Coming out of the winter season, there’s a good chance that you’ll need new air filters. Fortunately, HVAC air filters are user-replaceable and come in standard sizes. You just need to make sure you’re buying the same size as the old filter. Clean air filters will help you maintain good indoor air quality and prevent indoor air pollutants such as dust and mold spores from circulating in your home.

Have the air ducts cleaned. Make it a point to have your home’s air ducts cleaned every five years or so. Clean air ducts help ensure that the air which circulates throughout your home is clean. A typical air duct cleaning routine, when performed by a residential heating repair professional, includes resealing the duct joints. The sealant can be applied using a remote-controlled device that sprays liquid sealant or by isolating the air ducts and introducing aerosol-based sealant.

Check your thermostats. Make sure that your thermostats are responsive, regardless of type. Set the temperature manually to a few degrees over your usual setting, wait a few minutes, then check the vent output to see if the air became warmer. Repeat the process but go the other way; that is, a few degrees lower than where you usually set it. If the temperature doesn’t change either way (or if the temperature jumps too much), perform thermostat troubleshooting. In most cases, unresponsive thermostats are caused by dead batteries or dirty contact points.

Review the furnace shutdown procedure. If your home has a fuel-burning furnace, proper shutdown procedures need to be followed. Leftover fuel in the reservoir can result in loud popping sounds when you start it back up when heating season comes around again later this year. Additionally, you should operate your air conditioner for several minutes to make sure it’s running smoothly and call for repairs if you notice problems such as leaks or unusual noises. Doing this early in the season can help prevent uncomfortable days spent waiting for the air conditioner to be fixed.
