HVAC Prep Tasks to Finish Before Winter Arrives

A man looking at an HVAV system

As winter approaches, you should gradually prepare your home — particularly your HVAC system — for colder weather. From changing air filters to road-testing your furnace, make sure you have everything covered.

Shackelford Heating & Cooling, one of the area’s most trusted heating and air conditioning contractors, lists some winter HVAC prep tasks that you should get done this fall.

Turn your furnace on at least three times before winter. Get your furnace up and running at least three times in early fall to make sure everything is working properly. Adjust your thermostat to the desired winter setting and wait until your heating system reaches that temperature before turning the air off. Try to remember when your furnace was installed. If you think it’s time to get a replacement, consider a fuel-efficient unit that operates quietly.

Change the air filters and clean the vents. Prevent dust and dirt from accumulating in the filtering system by changing the filters promptly and regularly. It’s a good idea to check your air filter every month. If you notice any issues, be sure not to delay filter replacement for more than 90 days. Experts in residential heating services also recommend checking and cleaning air vents in your home, as these places can also harbor dust and dirt. By preventing such buildup in the air vents, you can avoid ventilation blockages and inefficient airflow.

Program your thermostat properly. Switch to a programmable thermostat if you haven’t already. Make sure the appropriate settings are activated so that you can maintain optimal system efficiency and ensure maximum comfort inside your home.
